In the summer of 2012, June 25, 26, 27 and 28, the first national interdisciplinary fly fishing conference was presented in the small, steelhead-fishing village of Fredonia in western New York. The Children in the Stream's four day conference trained adults who were interested in starting a youth fly fishing program in their community, school, organization or company. This intensive workshops used fly fishing as the foundation for incorporating science, math, English language arts , community outreach and visual arts into the curriculum. The Children in the Stream Academy was an idea that has been mulling around in the head of Alberto Rey for the past decade. In designing the program, he matched his knowledge of fly fishing and the visual arts with Dr. Janeil Rey and Dr. Mike Jabot. Janeil 's experience in educational administration and literature coupled together the expertise of Dr. Michael Jabot in science education were extremely important additions to the workshops. Children in the Stream is designed around the concept of providing individuals all the instruction, materials and means of acquiring equipment needed to start their own customized interdisciplinary youth fly fishing program. The Children in the Stream Academy came together through the support from S.A.R.E.P. Youth Fly Fishing Program from Fredonia, NY, Orvis from Manchester, VT and the DreamCatcher Foundation in Buffalo, NY. It provides a truly unique program established to meet the needs of each community and the national school requirements of the common core learning standards. We continue to address how to accomplish goals while working within limited budgets. The ultimate goal is to get youth outdoors and provide them with a fuller understanding and appreciation of their environment. The interdisciplinary curriculum promotes a holistic interpretation of conservation and community involvement while nurturing future stewards of our natural resources.
