In the summer of 2012, the first national interdisciplinary fly fishing conference was presented in the village of Fredonia in western New York. The Children in the Stream's four day conference was a huge success and it continues to train adults who are interested in integrating fly fishing into their curriculum in their community, school, organization or company. The conference was changed to three days to accommodate the participants schedules. These intensive workshops use fly fishing as the foundation for investigating science, math, language arts, community outreach and visual arts. The conference was a concept that Alberto Rey, a guide, youth fly fishing program director, artist and professor, had been thinking about for about a decade before he discussed it with Dr. Janeil Rey and Dr. Mike Jabot. They were excited to add their expertise and feedback to the project and the Children in the Stream Conference was born. Janeil 's experience in educational administration and literature was instrumental in structuring the workshops and its content. Dr. Michael Jabot extensive knowledge in science education and national education standards provides extremely important perspectives to the workshops. Children in the Stream also provides the instruction, materials and means of acquiring equipment needed to implement the participant's own customized interdisciplinary curriculum or to start a youth fly fishing program. The truly unique programming strives to meet the needs of each school through the integration of the common core learning standards. We also address how to accomplish these goals while working within limited budgets. The conference's interdisciplinary workshops also promote a holistic integration of conservation and community involvement while nurturing future stewards of our natural resources. The ultimate goal is to get youth outdoors and provide them with a fuller understanding and appreciation of their environment.
The Children in the Stream Conference has come together through the support from S.A.R.E.P. / 4H Youth Fly Fishing Program of Fredonia, NY; Orvis Company of Manchester, VT; and the DreamCatcher Foundation of Buffalo, NY.
