Tentative Two-day Conference Schedule

Day 1
7:30 - 8:30am - Pass out schedules, name tags and journals
8:30 - 9:00am - Introduction to Children in the Stream staff, goals, schedules and to participants
9 - 10:30am Morning Session 1A: Conference room
Indoor group activity:
Pass out fly fishing literature and equipment (fly fishing rod and reel outfit)
Presentation on brief history of fly fishing
Introduction to fly fishing equipment: waders, boots, rod, reel, fly line, tippet, and flies
10:30 - 11:15am Morning Session 1B: Conference room
Indoor group activity:
Fly Fishing and Science Curriculum:
Basic entomology (seining and basic insect ID )
Invertebrates as biotic indicator of water quality
11:15am - 12:30pm Morning Session 1C: Conference room
Indoor group activity:
Introduction to Fly Tying
12:30 - 1:30pm - Lunch Break- on your own
1:30 - 3:00pm Afternoon Session IA : Local Stream or Pond
Outdoor group activity:
Observe and Analyze Natural Setting - Watershed dynamics and identification; geology of streams and shorelines, fish location as per dissolved oxygen, stream bed for spawning, tree canopy and effects on sedimentation, entomology and fish.
Stream Biology- document temperature of stream at different depths and locations and draw location of seining activity in slow and fast water and location of insects collected.
3:00 - 3:15pm Break / Travel to Fishing Spot if Needed
3:15 - 5:00pm Afternoon Session 1B : Local Stream or Pond
Outdoor group activity:
Fishing Introduction to Casting: Roll Cast, Overhead Cast and Mending (both hands)
5:00-6:00pm
Community Outreach around Fly Fishing: Waterway clean-up; Assessing economic impact; Land ethic:
Integration of place.
Starting a school or community program, integrating material into school curriculum, developing program curriculum, liability, funding

Day 2
Meet at State University of New York at Fredonia, NY - E114 Thompson
8:00 - 8:30am - Review/Preview: Responses to work done the previous day/Preview of the day’s schedule and focus
8:30 - 10:15am Morning Session 2A: Conference room
Indoor group activity:
Biology, examine vials, etc. (Water monitoring including probeware and GIS)
10:15 - 11:00am Morning Session 2B : Galleries
Break/Tour of RTPI Exhibitions
11:00am - 12:30pm Morning Session 2C : Conference room
Indoor group activity:
Basic fly tying session
12:30 - 1:30pm - Lunch Break and Travel to Alberto Rey's Studio in Fredonia, NY
1:30 - 2:30pm Afternoon Session 3A: Artist’s Studio, 211 Chestnut Street, Fredonia, NY
Outdoor group activity:
Trip to Alberto Rey, naturalist/artist, studio - discuss artwork and journals and integration of environment issues into artwork (www.albertorey.com).
2:30 - 3:30pm Afternoon Session 3B: Canadaway Creek
Outdoor group activity:
Go to Canadaway Creek to draw and write in journals.
3:30 - 4:30pm Afternoon Session 2A: Local Stream or Pond
Outdoor group activity:
Outdoor lab for science/physics of casting, biology, examine vials, etc.

Discuss “Water”:
Water as a resource;
Water/impacts to stream development;
Water in support of biological community; fish habitat (stream biology, draw location and document water)

Fishing - Review roll cast and introduce overhead cast
